Genre storytelling works well as enthusiastic co-creation by creator and audience. As an audience member, you have to be willing to be both familiar with and not jaded by tropes and devices specific to genre, and to appreciate each individual creation as part of an ongoing dialogue between individual creators and the rules and possibilities of genre. Once you, as a creator or audience member, lose enthusiasm for those particular constraints, diminishing returns set in, no matter how much a particular work or group of works are supposed to go against expectations or subvert the form. They still work best within an acceptance of that form in the first place. (Jayaprakash Satyamurthy)
