Just fifteen minutes surfing the eBay auction site is enough to give you both the giggles and the chills: a barbed wire collection with a bid of a thousand dollars on it. An « artist » who makes custom « Bondage Barbie » dolls, a man selling his « entire » plastic raincoat collection that numbers in the hundreds…

Rousseau said most peoples’ lives are so dull and bourgeois that we create crisis to make our empty days more meaningful. Do we collect pre-1970 shower curtains, Elvis action figures, or Czech can openers to pump some kind of meaning into our Nowhere Man lives? Does owning a complete collection of Coca Cola bottles make you valid?
