Last night, the sounds of the city seemed altered. I could hear the distant hum of traffic on the boulevard, the clatter of trains rumbling past, the intermittent backdrop of sirens wailing, sometimes the buzz of a passing bike, but it was as if these sounds were coming from another place altogether, or rather, as if this whole quiet throbbing was the breath of the metropolis. I like it when I can listen to this urban breathing, rather than having my bedroom window completely shut. An envelopping presence, soothing.
